Red Chalk Group has developed one of the world’s most complete, accurate, and current U.S. patent databases – a truly contemporaneous database which is now available directly to our clients. Our Data Services team can help you identify the appropriate Scorecards, Custom Data Extracts, Patent Indicators, and USPTO Bibliographic Patent Data to meet your needs. Save significant time and money by sourcing your USPTO data from Red Chalk Group. To learn more about our full set of data services, including pricing, please contact us for additional information at info@redchalkgroup.com.
Within hours of the weekly public release by the USPTO, Red Chalk Group’s Data Services team updates our U.S. patent database to reflect newly published patents and applications. More importantly, we apply the following proprietary processes to ensure we have the most accurate and complete U.S. patent database in the business.
Data normalization
We immediately normalize the USPTO data by comparing new release information to our historic libraries to account for all errors (e.g., spelling, punctuation, etc.) and other name variations/aliases. Those that we have not previously identified, our team manually researches. We normalize all assignee names, inventors, law firms, and non-patent references.
Capture of changes in assignment
Each day, we also update our U.S. patent data to reflect all changes in assignments publicly reported to the USPTO – a step that is absolutely critical given the growing rate of patent transactions.
Unification of subsidiaries, mergers, and acquisitions
Finally, our Data Services team aggregates assignees into corporate entities – creating a corporate hierarchy - by considering all subsidiaries as well by tracking all mergers & acquisition activities.
The result of our proprietary processes is that Red Chalk has the most current, complete and accurate U.S. patent database as it relates to patent ownership – a truly contemporaneous database that uniquely provides our clients with the detailed knowledge required to compete in today’s environment of rapidly changing patent ownership. Our patent databases are available directly to our clients via our Scorecards, Due Diligence Reports, Custom Data Extracts, Patent Indicators, and USPTO Bibliographic extracts.
Scorecards
Based upon our proprietary patent data and statistics (see below), Red Chalk Group develops industry, company, portfolio, or patent Scorecards. Similar to those published in
The Wall Street Journal, MIT Technology Review, etc., our Scorecards compare the relative quality and strength of patent portfolios.
Our industry Scorecards are utilized by both corporate clients and investment
professionals seeking to better understand the competitive position of one company
relative to another. (When comparing across industries, our industry data is normalized
to consider the specific characteristics of each industry.)
Our company Scorecards compare business units or technologies within a company and are frequently utilized to compare the relative competitive position among competitors for a specific technology (sometimes as a basis to initiate cross licensing discussions) or to compare the relative productivity of business units within a company.
Our patent
Scorecards compare the relative strength of specific patents within a portfolio – a primary tool for separating the most interesting and potentially valuable patents from the weaker patents.

Due diligence reports
Red Chalk’s company or patent level due-diligence reports provide you with an objective view of a portfolio or a specific patent. Our reports are based upon our proprietary patent data and statistics as well as our wide network of technical experts. Where others provide “canned” or automated reports, we combine our data and statistics with our “eyes-on-patents” approach to ensure we consider the specifics of each patent and its related claims as no one measure can accurately capture the value or potential value of a patent.
Custom data extracts
If you are seeking USPTO bibliographic information for a specific industry, company, or technology, Red Chalk Group can build custom search algorithms and provide you with the detailed information you need, again in the appropriate file format. We offer the standard USPTO bibliographic fields including publication number, title, inventors, patent and non-patent references, abstract, first claim, etc. We can tailor the output to fit your needs.
The custom data extract can be subsequently loaded into your own spreadsheet or database program for further manipulation. For example, you can add non-patent information to the data extract or simply share your “slice” of findings with others. Contact us for specific details at info@redchalkgroup.com.
Patent indicators and statistics
Red Chalk Group also offers direct access to our proprietary patent indicators and statistics. Our indicators can be utilized as measures of portfolio and/or patent quality and strength and are a key tool in assisting in the triage of large portfolios. Statistics are available on both the portfolio and patent level. Examples of our statistics include:
Portfolio level statistics
Time-series statistics
Patent counts over time
Citation counts over time (from/to the portfolio including
internal, external, and examiner)
Citation ratio - ratio of how often a portfolio (for
a specific year) is cited relative to all patents issued in the specific year -
an indicator of portfolio quality for a specific year.
Citation index - weighted average citation ratio over a period of time - an indicator
of portfolio quality over time.
Science index - the frequency of references from the portfolio to qualified scientific
journals - an indicator of the scientific nature (applied vs. basic) of the technology
represented by the portfolio.
Technology age - the average age of the patents in the portfolio plus the average
age of the patents cited by the portfolio - an indicator of the age of the technology
represented by the portfolio.
Other
– Top entities citing the portfolio (or cited by the portfolio)
– Top patents citing the portfolio (or cited by the portfolio)
– Top USPTO classes (or IPC)
– Top inventors
Patent level statistics
Number of citations
– Internal citations
– External citations
– Examiner citations
Class citation rank - rank based upon the number of citations a patent receives relative to all patents
issued in the same class - an indicator of patent quality.
Year/class citation rank - rank based upon the number of citations a patent receives
relative to all patents issued in the same year and class - an indicator of patent
quality.
Science index - the frequency of references from the patent to qualified scientific
journals - an indicator of the scientific nature (applied vs. basic) of the technology
represented by the patent.
Technology age - the age of the patent plus the average age of the patents
cited by the portfolio - an indicator of the age of the technology represented by
the patent.
Other
– Number of claims
– Number of independent claims
– Number of dependent claims
– Claim 1 word count
– Legal status
Our data services allow you to access our proprietary indicators for your own portfolio, or any other portfolio you may create through standard search tools and databases. Our infrastructure enables processing of large scale data sets in a timely and cost efficient fashion. Contact us for specific details at info@redchalkgroup.com.
USPTO patent bibliographic data
Red Chalk Group offers USPTO bibliographic data from 1976 to current. Our data is sourced directly from the USPTO and converted into each three standard file formats including:
Microsoft SQL Server data format
Oracle Data Format
XML Data Format
We can provide this data to you on an annual, quarterly, monthly, or weekly basis. Our customers for USPTO data services typically include:
Universities
Government/quasi-government organizations
Research institutes
Corporations
Technology start-ups (e.g., database search tool developers)

Qualified scientific journals
When considering non-patent references, it is critical to distinguish between journals
of applied research (e.g., IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems)
from those of basic research (e.g., Inorganic Materials) from those not related
to research at all (e.g., product brochures). Red Chalk Group understands
these differences and maintains a qualified list of approximately 4,000 scientific
journals which are utilized when assessing non-patent references.
